Derby Ace survives end game run by Rain or Shine

Philippine Basketball Association
2010 Fiesta Conference
B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados vs Rain or Shine Elasto Painters
Derby Ace wins 86-84

Led by Solomon Mercado with 45 points, Rain or Shine almost made a big comeback after being down most of the game, only to lose by two points to the B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados, 86-84 Derby Ace had the chance to seal the game from the free throw line, but Rookie Rico Maierhofer missed two free throws and gave ROS a chance to steal the game but Gabe Norwood misses a long three and Derby Ace notched its tenth win to close the gap with league leading Talk N Text and San Miguel.

Derby Ace Import Clif Brown
had another monster game with 23 rebounds (15 offensive) and 18 points, but was only 8 out of 20 from the field. The duo of James Yap (20points) and Paul Artadi (15 points and 7 assists), both from UE helped Derby Ace take control of the game for the 1st three quarters, both making 4 three point shots to keep Rain or Shine at bay.

Rain or Shine made a run in the final six minutes of the game behind Mercado who was 7 out of 10 from 3-point range (22 in the 4th quarter), but no other ROS player scored in double digits. The awful free throw shooting of Derby Ace as a team also helped Rain or Shine inch closer, missing 10 free throws in the game. including the last 2 by Maierhofer.

Known for his offense, James Yap made a crucial defensive play at the end of the 4th quarter, guarding Sol Mercado and forcing him to miss a three.

Game scores:

Derby Ace 86 – Yap J. 20, Brown 18, Artadi 15, Pingris 8, Reavis 8, Yap R. 6, Maierhofer 4, Allado 4, Simon 2, Canaleta 1.

Rain or Shine 84 – Mercado 45, Norwood 9, Chan 7, Arana 7, Cruz 6, Reyes 5, Lewis 3, Ibanes 2, Tang 0, Laure 0, Hrabak 0.

Quarters: 23-14, 53-37, 67-51, 86-84

James Yap leads Derby Ace to beat San Miguel

Philippine Basketball Association
B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados vs San Miguel Beermen
Derby Ace beats San Miguel 83-82

James Yap showed again why he is a big time player and the Best Player of the Conference last Philippine Cup, by leading the B-Meg Derby Ace Llamados to a big win over rival and 1st place San Miguel Beermen, 83-82.

Former MVP James Yap scored 23 pts including a big shot at the end of the game to give Derby Ace a 1-point win. Nino “KG” Canaleta contributed 14 pts with 3 three point shots to help Derby Ace control the game in the 1st quarter, but San Miguel controlled the second half and led by 8 points with 9min left in the game.

With Derby Ace Import Clif Brown fouling out of the game, it seems like San Miguel will retain its No. 1 position in the current 2010 PBA Fiesta Conference, but Yap had other things in mind making the game winning shot and with 6 seconds left in the game, the defense of Derby Ace held on to give them a big win and is now solo 3rd place.

With the subpar performance of Import Clif Brown (scoring only 11pts but collecting 13rebs and 5asts), we’ll see in the next few days if Derby Ace will replace him, special mention goes to the locals of Derby Ace who stepped up this game like Marc Pingris (10pts and 14rebs) and Paul Artadi (9pts, 3rebs and 5asts). Next game will be this Friday, June 11 vs Rain or Shine.

Game Scores:

Derby Ace 83 – Yap J. 23, Canaleta 14, Brown 11, Yap R. 11, Pingris 10, Artadi 9, Maierhofer 3, Allado 2, Simon 0, Reavis 0.

San Miguel 82 – Freeman 27, Cabagnot 12, Seigle 11, Hontiveros 8, Yeo 7, Santos 7, Washington 6, Villanueva 3, Pena 1, Miranda 0, Ildefonso 0.

Quarters: 26-17, 39-35, 64-65, 83-82
